UNDERSTANDING
Birth Trauma
Over the last 20 years it has been nationally acknowledged that the distress and trauma associated with pregnancy, birth and following has significantly increased.
Approximately 4 -5% of women who give birth develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – which amounts to around 30,000 cases each year.
While pregnancy and birth are not always associated with trauma many women and their partners - ranging from 15-45%- experience varying degrees of trauma related to different aspects of their pregnancy journey.
Birth Trauma is often associated with the emotions you experience during the process and is not always directly related to the events themselves or the outcomes.
It often revolves around feelings such as:
-
-
Not feeling heard during your pregnancy, birth or afterwards.
-
Experiencing a lack of kindness or respect in your care.
-
Perceiving a sense of being unsafe, loss of control or helplessness.
-
It is important to acknowledge these feelings to foster healing and support.
It is also clear that what makes a person’s experience traumatic is unique to each individual and cannot be defined solely by the events that occurred.
Not all vaginal births are idyllic & not all
caesarean births are traumatic.
We do all birthing people a great disservice when we make these sweeping generalisations about birth”

Success Stories
“I feel as though an invisible tight elastic band around my chest has disappeared since my appointment with you. I hadn’t realised the extent to which my mental health had been affected by my birth experience but I now feel ‘set free’.
Talking to you has helped me find the words to explain my feelings to my husband and I know that this means I will continue to heal.
Thank you, thank you, thank you."
"Hi Jane I just wanted to send a heartfelt thank you for today. I have never seen Rich share that much emotion before.
You created a really safe place for us both. We can’t thank you enough."
Charlotte and Rich
"Due to events during the birth of my second child I was left with PTSD which made me anxious about this pregnancy.
Jane played a huge part in the positive outcome this time. Her knowledge, patience, support and reassurance have been truly remarkable and I felt well prepared for the delivery.
And the subsequent debrief was also very helpful in moving forward from my previous trauma."

Birth Trauma Resolution is a solution focused approach and is designed to offer effective quick results from treatment. The intervention is known as the Rewind technique and it aims to lift the fear, anxiety and other negative feelings that can remain long after a difficult birth. It encourages the person to deliberately dissociate from the emotional effects of the trauma helping them to see the cause of the fear without feeling the effects of it. Following a debrief consider and identify treatments to support your recovery. Teach you breathing and visualisation techniques to help you relax and reduce symptoms of anxiety and panic. Help you to process the negative emotions connected to your pregnancy/birth experience using the Rewind Technique so you can remember it without feelings of anxiety and panic. Help rebuild your confidence and support you in your own mental health recovery and/or parenting journey. Support and birth planning and advice for future births.
